Roxbury Township, Walter Thomas Irwin, of Succasunna, NJ passed away peacefully on August 12, 2023, at Karen Ann Quinlan Home for Hospice at the age of 89. His wife Julia, their three sons and daughter-in-law were by his side.
Walter, known to all who knew and loved him as Wally, was born in Jersey City, NJ on May 25, 1934, to Walter and Dorothy Irwin. He proudly served in Korea as a Marine and was honorably discharged on August 4th, 1960. He was a proud member of Pipefitters Local 274 for 60 years, where he served as President and Vice President before retiring in 1997.
Walter loved spending time with his family, and especially cherished his grandchildren. He was most proud of his home and the life his family lived there. He enjoyed working on his house, family gatherings on the deck and around the pool. His laugh and smile were always infectious. He loved watching the NY Giants, going to car shows, all things Irish, listening to music, camping with the family and the Roxbury Roamers, and going on cruises with Julie. Walter also enjoyed trips with the Roxbury Ever Young Seniors.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Julie, his son, Wayne of Hackettstown, his son John of Succasunna with his three children, Justin, Jamie, and Jared, and his son Robert with his wife Linda of Sparta, and her children, Joseph and Emily and grandchildren Luca and Alex. He is pre-deceased by his parents, Walter and Dorothy Irwin, his brother Donald Irwin, and his sister Muriel Irwin.
Friends may visit at the Davis & Hepplewhite Funeral Home, 96 Main Street, Succasunna, NJ 973-584-7264 (davishepplewhitefh.com) on Wednesday from 2 – 6 pm. The Funeral Liturgy will then be held on Thursday, 10 am at St. Therese R C Church in Succasunna. The interment will follow with Military Honors at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Chester.
