Eleanor M Canfield

     Dover, NJ:     Mrs. Eleanor Marie Canfield, (nee: Gagliardi) 93, beloved Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother died on May 25, 2024, at St. Clare’s Hospital in Dover, NJ of complications from a prolonged illness.
     Eleanor was born in Dover,  August 4th, 1930, and lived there with her parents Incoronata and Leonardo (aka: Louis /Leonard), and her 5 siblings: Americo, Joe, Lena, Mike, and Sam.  Prior to graduating Dover High School in 1948, Eleanor completed her grade school education at Sacred Heart Catholic School in Dover.  While at Dover High School, Eleanor joined the girls field hockey and basketball teams, and made many friends as her 1948 Dover High School Yearbook will attest.  After marriage to Floyd Canfield at Sacred Heart Church in Dover, Eleanor moved with her husband to Ledgewood, NJ where they lived from 1953 to 1979. It was in Ledgewood where they raised 5 children: Steven, David, Marianne, and “The Twins”: Michael and Glen.
     As a teenager Eleanor worked in her father Leonardo’s Fruit and Vegetable Store, and was later employed in Dover, as an office worker, with McGregor’s, a sportswear manufacturer.  At the time of her engagement in May 1952 at the age of 21 to a young Marine, Pfc Floyd Canfield, Eleanor was an office employee of the New Jersey Tobacco Company.  During Eleanor’s married life, after her children were all enrolled in the Roxbury Township School System, Eleanor worked in the Bakery and Deli departments at The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company (A&P) in Ledgewood and Denville for a total of more than 30 years.
     Later in life as a retiree,  Eleanor enjoyed many social activities and outings with her sister Lena, beginning with Eleanor’s affiliations with Sacred Heart Church Leisure Club, the Rockaway Seniors , Red Hat Society, and last, but not least, her many dinner outings accompanied by her son, David, with the Morris County Wine Club.
Eleanor was predeceased by her husband Floyd Canfield in 1997 and is survived by her 5 children: Steven and his wife Paula; David; Marianne;  Michael and his wife Dianna; and Glen and his wife Robin. Eleanor was further greatly blessed during her lifetime with 8 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren.
     Friends and relatives may visit at the Davis & Hepplewhite Funeral Home, 96 Main Street, Succasunna, NJ 973-584-7264 (davishepplewhitefh.com) on Friday (May 31st) from 5 – 8 pm. The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Funeral Home, followed by the Interment at the Succasunna Presbyterian Cemetery.
