Edward L Sweeney

Roxbury Township, Edward Lawrence Sweeney, 87, died on July 1, 2013 at home in Succasunna. He was born in Lower Berkshire Valley and lived in Roxbury Township all of his life. He served in the US Navy during WW II as a submariner aboard the USS Parche and USS Pipefish. After working for many years for the US Postal Service, he retired in 1986 and “hit” the road in his Winnebago to see and enjoy the USA. He was a long time member of the  Succasunna United Methodist Church, life member of the US Submarine Veterans of WW II, Gudgeon Chapter State of NJ, Kenvil VFW Meeker Post #2833, Mine Hill American Legion Post #391, Life Member of the Lake Hopatcong Elks Lodge #782, and proud “Exempt”  Member of the Roxbury Fire Company #1 for over 60 years.

He was predeceased by his father Lawrence F Sweeney, mother Kitty Bird, sister Beryl Champi, and beloved daughter-in-law Christine M Sweeney in 2012.

He is survived by his loving wife Iva (Haggerty) of 66 years, sons; Kenneth (and Anne) of Sherrills Ford, NC, Lawrence (and Debra) of Sunset Beach, NC, Gary of Succasunna, and daughter Linda (and Doug) Scherzer of Calabash, NC. He also leaves his 10 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren who brought him much joy and laughter; Kelly Bruno (and Jerry Rendi), Tracy (and Allan) Brucato, Kevin Sweeney, Shannon (and Michele) Sweeney, Dr. April Sweeney (and Michael Lindstrom), Meagan (and Travis) Tedrow, Jennifer (and Kevin ) Lewis, Beth Cerqueira, Jodi (and Jay Avery) Valecz, Terri (and Michael) Finnegan, Taira (and Stacy) Brock, also; Nicholas, Lindsey, Jonathan, Kira, Brady, Mathilda, and Elsa.

Friends may visit at the Davis & Hepplewhite Funeral Home, 96 Main Street, Succasunna 973-584-7264 (davishepplewhitefh.com) on Friday from 3 – 7 pm. The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, 10 am, at Succasunna United Methodist Church, with the interment to follow at the Church Cemetery. Donations may be made in his name to the Succasunna United Methodist Church or Roxbury Fire Department #1.
