Betty Moore

Matthews, NC.   Mrs. Betty Laila Moore, 76, peacefully went to be with her Lord and Savior on May 21, 2019.  She was born January 12, 1943 in New York City, and her early years were spent in Brooklyn, NY; Lillesand, Norway; Long Island, NY; and Sparta, NJ; with summers in Rowland, PA.  She then lived in Morris County, NJ for about 50 years. She moved to the Plantation Estates retirement community near Charlotte, NC in 2014.

Betty graduated from Newton (NJ) High School and the Katharine Gibbs School. She led a quiet life as a caregiver and earned a living as a secretary. Her role of caregiver began in 1966 with the birth of her daughter, Lisa, with spina bifida, and continued until Lisa’s death in 2012. Betty also cared for her parents, Sigurd and Alvhild Omundsen, in their old age. Her places of employment included the Hercules munitions plant in Kenvil, NJ in the 1960s and Hope House in Dover, NJ in the 1980s and 1990s.

Christian community was important to Betty. She was a member of the Hillside Lutheran Brethren Church (Succasunna, NJ) for over 40 years.  Hillside welcomed the young Moore family with open-arms, including making accommodations for four year-old Lisa and her wheelchair, and church friends later teamed-up to enable Betty to live independently in New Jersey after health issues beset in the years just before her move to Charlotte.  Also significant to her were Christmas Concert Weekends at Tuscarora Inn & Conference Center and attending Westminster Presbyterian Church (Charlotte, NC).

Betty learned to love travel at an early age, as the daughter of Norwegian immigrants and a father who was a professional seaman.  As a child, Betty lived in her parents’ hometown of Lillesand, Norway; as a teenager, she returned for visits. As young parents, she and her husband, Sandy, took their children to see relatives in Virginia, North Carolina, and Montana, with visits to national parks and other destinations added to the westward journeys. In recent years she spent time with family in the Florida Panhandle, visited dear friends in Arizona, cruised to Alaska, took road trips with her son across the Southeast, and enjoyed excursions with fellow retirees to Abington, Charleston, and Myrtle Beach.

She was predeceased by her daughter Lisa Moore in 2012 and is survived by her two sons: Eric Moore (and Diana Palecek) of North Carolina and C.B. Moore of Florida.

Friends may attend a memorial service on Saturday, May 25 at 3 p.m., in the auditorium of the clubhouse of the Plantation Estates Expansion, near 606 Birch View Drive, Matthews, NC, off South Trade Street.

Friends may visit at the Davis & Hepplewhite Funeral Home, 96 Main Street, Succasunna, NJ 07876, 973-584-7264 (davishepplewhitefh.com) on Tuesday, May 28, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 29, 11 a.m., at the Hillside Church in Succasunna, NJ with the interment to follow at the Flanders-Hillside Cemetery in Succasunna.
