Roxbury Township, Mrs. Leola Gordon Johnson passed away on November 17, 2016 at Merry Heart Nursing Home. She was 86 years of age. Born in Mt. Arlington on February 23, 1930 to Dr. Charles and Lulu Gordon, she was a graduate of East Stroudsburg State Teachers College. While in college, she met and married Leo Douglas Johnson of Bristol, PA. Returning home to Berkshire Valley, she taught various elementary grades in Franklin School within the Roxbury School System for over 30 years until retiring with Leo to North Carolina in 1986. She was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and active golfer and tennis player, Leola will be especially remembered for the many generations of Roxbury school children she shepherded with unceasing warmth, devotion and laughter.
Predeceased by her parents, her husband Leo, and her sisters, Mary Gordon Bauer and Ruth Gordon Johnson, she is survived by her three children, Robert Johnson, William Johnson and his wife Patricia, and Richard Johnson and his partner Kim; three grandchildren, Derek, Brandon, and Ryan Johnson, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit at the Davis & Hepplewhite Funeral Home, 96 Main Street, Succasunna 973-584-7264 (davishepplewhitefh.com) on Sunday from 2 – 5 pm. The Funeral Service will be held on Monday 10 am at the Funeral Home, with the interment to follow at the Berkshire Valley Presbyterian Cemetery. Donations may be made in her name to the Roxbury Township Alumni Association for scholarships.
