Roxbury Township, Mr. Charles A Brown, Jr., 102, died on October 29, 2016 at St. Clare’s Hospital in Denville. He was born in Oswego, NY and lived in Lower Berkshire Valley most all of his life. He served in the U S Army during WW II and became the first School Principal of the new Jefferson School in Roxbury Township, before retiring in 1982. He was also a member of the Lower Berkshire Valley Methodist Church. He attended the Oswego Public Schools and graduated from the Oswego Normal School where he later received his Bachelors Of Education degree. He attended Montclair State Teachers College and received his Master Of Science degree and master of Arts Degree at Teachers College-State University Of New York at Oswego. He was also certified to teach mentally handicapped children.

When first coming to New Jersey Mr. Brown taught for three years at the Kingsley School for boys in Essex Fells, NJ (where he met his wife Edith, and married to her for 71 years). In 1939 he taught in Mine Hill Public Schools, and later became the administrative principal. There was a five year period (1941-1946) when he served in the U.S Army. In 1964 he became the Principal of the Jefferson School in the Roxbury Township Public Schools, and retired from there in 1982 after 38 years in education.

Mr. Brown was an army veteran having served five years after being in the anti-aircraft-96^th Coast Artillery, and becoming a first lieutenant at Officers Training Camp in Barkeley, TX he became the medical supply Officer in charge of the 2200- bed Newton D. Baker Hospital in Martinsburg, W. VA

He was a member of the lower Berkshire Valley United Methodist church, and active for many years as finance chairman. Mr. Brown was a member of the Jockey Hollow Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. As an eighteen year old boy in 1932 he was President of the Schuyler Chapter of the CAR (Children of the American Revolution). He was a member of the Historical and Archival Society of the Northern Nj Conference United Methodist Church. Mr. Brown was also a member of the National Education association, the NJ Retired Education Association, and the Morris County Retirees Education Association where he served several years as a treasurer and later as scholar ship chairman. He was a Life Member of the New Jersey Congress of Parents and Teachers.

He was predeceased by his wife Edith (Firstbrook) Brown (of 71 years) in 2013 and by his sister Lucille (Brown) Ellsworth. He is survived by his son Charles A Brown III and his wife Lisa of Hackettstown, 2 grandchildren: Eric and his fiancé Ceci and Ryan and his wife Christina, 2 great grandchildren: Velouria and Myles, and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may visit at the Davis & Hepplewhite Funeral Home, 96 Main Street, Succasunna 973-584-7264 (davishepplewhitefh.com) on Wednesday from 9 – 10:30 am. The Funeral Service with Military Honors will be held at 10:30 am. The interment will follow at the Succasunna Presbyterian Cemetery with a reception to follow at 12 noon at the Emmanuel Bible Church in Schooley’s Mountain.
