Brick, New Jersey – Lewis E. Guerin Jr., 92, moved to his heavenly home on Friday, June 12th, from complications due to COVID-19. He was predeceased by his wife, Flora, just 41 days earlier. They were married for 72 years. Lew is survived by his children who loved him, Kathleen and her husband Michael, Glenn and his wife Elizabeth, Scott and his wife Debbie, and Lewis III and his wife, Ginny. In total, Lew leaves 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Born and raised on his father’s dairy farm in Ironia, NJ, Lew built his first house next to his father’s on what would become Guerin Lane in Ironia, NJ. As a young man with a young family, he decided to step away from the family farm and start a trucking company, Dover Trucking Company. Years later, he and two friends started a diesel sales, parts, and repair company, Dover Diesel Service, in Rockaway NJ. During his time there, he led the installation of the first dynamometer in New Jersey, an innovative electrically-run diagnostic tool for diesel engines. After nearly 30 years, he left the company and began his semi-retirement years developing and managing real estate starting in Blairstown NJ before moving to Bridgewater, Virginia, where he and Flora managed their townhome properties. Twenty years later, he and Flora moved back to New Jersey where they lived independently before transitioning to assisted living, and then to a nursing home.
His exuberant spirit, glint in his eye and drive to tackle new challenges began in his youth when he volunteered to be one of the first children to foster puppies through the new program organized by the 4H club. This turned out to be the start of the Seeing Eye organization’s Puppy Program, a vibrant program that, to this day, has assisted thousands of people since its inception. In addition, Lew was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. George Washington’s troops used Joshua Guerin’s farm when they encamped in Jockey Hollow, just outside of Morristown.
Known to all as a kind and generous man, Lew, Dad, grandpa, will be greatly missed. For those who wish to show your support of Lew, in place of flowers, donations can be sent to the Seeing Eye’s Pennies for Puppies program at PO Box 375, Morristown, NJ 07963 or www.seeingeye.org.
