Virginia E Smith

Roxbury Township, Virginia E. Smith, 86, passed away on August 4, 2026 at home.  She was born and raised in Newark and Hillside, NJ.  She was one of six children, 3 sisters and two brothers.  She met her husband when she was 9 years old and they got married in May of 1961.  In 1966, she moved to Succasunna where she raised her three children and was a homemaker.  Since she was a homemaker, she wanted a pool to keep her children busy and entertained.  As her children got older, the pool got larger until she ended up with an inground pool that she enjoyed for many years.  She taught her children, grandchildren and some of her great grandchildren how to swim.  She helped her husband run his own vending business, Allstate Vending, where she did all his bookkeeping, bids and took all the phones calls for him.  She also kept score for her daughters’ softball games and at times was an umpire at their games.  Sometimes she was even an umpire at her son’s baseball games.  She had many family gatherings and parties at her home where everyone, including herself, would be swimming, playing horseshoes, badminton, volleyball, ping pong, playing card games  and even had people dancing and doing the Polka in the basement.  She enjoyed going to the Meadowlands for the horse races and also enjoyed going to Atlantic City, especially the Tropicana, where she would meet up with many of her family members where they would all enjoy each other’s company and gamble the night away and come home with the funniest stories.  She loved all her grandchildren and helped raised them.  She got the greatest joy in seeing her great grandchildren and watching them grow and listening to the funny stories that involved them.  She just enjoyed and loved everyone.  She will truly be missed by all.

She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Robert A. Smith, Sr, in 2021 and by her daughter, Debra Lynn Smith in 1994 and her son Robert A. Smith, Jr. who just recently passed in July of 2026.  She is survived by her daughter, Robin (and Eric) Shenk of Mt. Arlington, her grandchildren, Candice Linzmayer of Southampton, Justin (and Ashley) Messina of Kenvil, Ryan (and Kelsey) Messina of Hackettstown, and Jason Messina of Landing.  She is also survived by her great grandchildren, Brandon, Adelyn, Elaina, Morgan, Finley, Adriana, Malia, Jordana, Colton and Elora.  She also leaves behind her two little doggies, Ruby and Crystal.

Family and friends may visit on Monday, August 10, 2026 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Davis & Hepplewhite Funeral Home, 96 Main Street, Succasunna, NJ.  Her Funeral Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Funeral Home.  Family and friends may also come to the Funeral Home on Tuesday from 11 to 12 noon, the interment will follow at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Chester, NJ.
