Roxbury Township, Olive “Joy” O’Connell passed away at home surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, May 28, 2017. An angel has gained her wings. She was 83.
Born on January 8, 1934 in Elizabeth, NJ to the late James and Mabel (Griswold) Noonan. She was a lifelong resident of New Jersey, growing up in Mount Tabor, before settling down with her own family in Roxbury.

She was predeceased by her loving husband, John “Jack” O’Connell in 2016. They were married on August 23, 1959 and were married for 57 wonderful years.

Joy worked as a cook for the Roxbury School District before retiring in 2000 after 25 years. Upon retiring, Joy and her late husband, Jack, purchased their own business, Jack’s Joy, before deciding to officially retire in 2008.

Joy was happiest when she was spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She will be remembered as a bright, shining light by all who knew her and those that loved her.

Joy is survived by her children, James O’Connell and his wife, Jacqueline of Hopatcong; Deborah O’Connell of Byram; and Faith O’Connell of Mount Pocono. She was blessed with six grandchildren, Amanda, John, Stephanie, James, Nicholas, and Jessica; and five great grandchildren, Gabriella Joy, Kayleigh, John, Luke, and Madelyn. Joy is also survived by her sister, Faith “Tess” Gibbs of Aliquippa, PA.

Friends may offer their condolences to the family at the Davis and Hepplewhite Funeral Home, 96 Main Street, Succasunna, on Thursday from 4 – 7 pm. The funeral will be held on Friday, 10 am at the funeral home, followed by the interment at the Succasunna Presbyterian Cemetery. Donations may be made in her name to the Alzheimer’s Association.
