John J. Murphy, 95, of Succasunna, NJ passed away on March 14, 2022 at Mt. Arlington Senior Living.

John was born in Port Magee, County Kerry, Ireland on April 18, 1926. He is survived by his six loving children Maureen Murphy Quinn (Tom), Una Cassidy (Sean), Anne Israel (Bob), John (Sue), Terence and Brian (Kelly). Also survived by his grandchildren, – Kieran Quinn, Siobhan Kolodziej (Mike), Sean Cassidy (Brianna), Colleen Cassidy, Zachary Israel, Tara Israel, Nicole Murphy, Shalynn Murphy, Annie Murphy, Lauren Murphy and Erin Murphy and two great grandchildren, his “puddins” – Finn Kolodziej and Eamon Cassidy. He is also survived by his brother Danny (Hannah) in Ireland, and sisters Joan Ryan & Sheila Driscoll of NY, sister-in-laws Teresa Murphy of NY, Nancy Haftl (Frank) of NJ, along with a clans worth of nieces and nephews in the USA and Ireland.

John was predeceased by his loving wife, Nuala (nee Mulloy) who passed in 2010, his parents John and Mary Murphy, siblings Liam, Michael, Thomas, Maureen Molyneaux, Helena Woods, and Nora Carr.

John emigrated to the USA in 1952 and started working in New York.  He met the love of his life at an Irish dance in Rockaway, NY and they married in 1955.  They spent the next 55 years dancing together and raising their six children.  They moved to New Jersey in 1957 when John went to work for Bell Labs in Whippany, NJ.  He had a long career as a carpenter with Bell Labs and worked there until he retired. John and Nuala spent the next 20+ years enjoying their retirement winters in Estero, FL and enjoyed life to the fullest.  They resided in Morristown, Dover, Toms River, Succasunna, and Estero, Florida.

He was a proud Kerryman who steadfastly supported his Gaelic football team in Ireland & was a decorated player in Gaelic Park in New York.  His favorite American teams were the NY Giants and the Yankees.  He loved being Irish and all things Irish and marched annually for many years in the New York and Morris County St. Patrick’s Day parades.

John was an active member of the Irish American Association of Northwest Jersey in the early years and dedicated a lot of time and labor to renovating the Cultural Center. He also belonged to the Knights of Columbus in Toms River.

A public wake will be held on Sunday, March 20^th at the Davis & Hepplewhite Funeral Home, 96 Main Street, Succasunna 2:00-6:00 p.m. The FuneralLiturgy Mass will be held at St. Therese R.C. Church, 151 Main Street, Succasunna on Monday, March 21st at 10:00 a.m.  Burial will be private.
