Roxbury Township, Gary Richard Sweeney, 70, passed away on January 20, 2021 at St Clare’s Hospital in Dover. He was born in Dover and was a life-long resident of Succasunna. He was a 1968 graduate of Roxbury High School and later attended Trenton State College. He served in the U S Army National Guard and became a Past Commander of the American Legion Post 391 in Mine Hill. He was a member and trustee of the Succasunna United Methodist Church and member of the North Jersey Street Rod Association. He held a 25 year career with the Roxbury Police Department retiring in 1998 as a Lieutenant, and member of the Roxbury PBA. After his retirement he worked for the Far Hills Police Department for several years.

He is survived by his daughter Jennifer (and Kevin) Lewis of Sims, NC, his 3 grandchildren; Nicholas Sweeney and (Keara Brazzel) of Succasunna, Lindsey (and Caleb Sharp) Lewis of Raleigh, NC, and Jonathan Lewis of Sims, NC, brother and sister in law Larry (and Debbie) Sweeney of Sunset Beach, NC, and sister and brother in law Linda (and Doug) Scherzer of Calabash, NC and sister in law Anne Sweeney of Catawba, NC and his nieces and nephews; Kelly, Tracy, Jodi, Terri, April, Meagan, Kevin, and Shannon, and his dear friend Melanie Pancoast of Hackettstown, NJ.

He was predeceased by his loving wife Christine M Sweeney (of 41 years) in 2012, his daughter Beth Sweeney on December 4, 2020, and brother Ken Sweeney in 2015. He was the son of the late Ed and Iva Sweeney.

Arrangements are by the Davis & Hepplewhite Funeral Home, 96 Main Street, Succasunna, NJ 973-584-7264 (davishepplewhitefh.com). A private burial will be held at the Succasunna Methodist Cemetery. A public Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
