Elizabeth B Chaney

Randolph Township, Mrs. Elizabeth B (Betty) Chaney, 92, died on November 18, 2021 at the Randolph Sunrise Assisted Living Center. She was born and raised in Upper Marlboro, MD, and moved to Mt. Arlington in 2004 to be closer to family, before her final move to Randolph 10 years ago. She retired after serving as an administrative assistant for the central offices of the Prince George’s County Board of Education in Maryland. A life-long Catholic, she later came to love attending Redeemer Lutheran Church in Succasunna with her son and daughter-in-law Paul and Paula Chaney after her move to Randolph.

Born in 1929, she was a child of the Depression, and a Young Adult during World War 2. An excellent student, she was also very active, serving in High School as class treasurer, editor of the student newspaper, business manager of the yearbook, participated in the student council, drama club, and glee club. She was a member of the National Honor Society, and graduated as the Valedictorian of her class in 1946. She was a member of the Victory Corps in High School, and did volunteer projects to support the war effort. She was a trained “Airplane Spotter” whose job was to climb to the rooftop of the High School and report suspected enemy aircraft to the Air Force. Rarely idle, when she moved to Mt. Arlington, she served as Secretary to the Mt. Arlington Seniors. For fun, she loved reading and American history, but also appreciated board games, card games, cooking and entertaining. Betty and husband Ben, together with her sister Louise and Louise’s husband Stanley (“Eddie”) Jaworski took turns hosting big family gatherings for the holidays. 4th of July featured gatherings at the Chesapeake Bay beaches with the addition of long-time family friends, and was punctuated by the typical Maryland crab feast, horseshoes, and fireworks on the beach. For Betty, while family was everything, as she aged, travel became a close second. In her life she visited 42 states, and 11 countries, traveling often with friends and the Travel Group made up of retirees associated with PG County Schools.

During her 10 years at Sunrise of Randolph, she was lovingly cared for by a legion of angels who helped keep her healthy, happy and safe, all the while becoming a ruthlessly successful Bingo player. It became her home, full of teasing and play and laughter with staff and friends.

She was predeceased by her husband Bennett E Chaney, of 45 years in 1995. She is survived by her son Paul G (and Paula W) Chaney of Mt. Arlington, grandsons; Brian M (and Katya S) Chaney of Seattle, Washington, and Kevin P (and Krista A) Chaney of Long Valley, and 4 great grandchildren; June S Chaney & Calvin D Chaney of Seattle, and their cousins Russell W Chaney & Bryn C Chaney of Long Valley.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, December 10th, at 11 am, at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Succasunna, followed by a lunch reception at the Church.
