Dr. Robert W Edwards

Dr. Robert W Edwards, MD died on August 11, 2021 at the Merry Heart Nursing Home in Succasunna. He was born in Whitestone in Queens, NY.  He lived in Succasunna most of his life before moving to Mt. Arlington 5 years ago.

He graduated from St. John’s University in NYC and earned his Medical Degree from New York Medical College, and then joined the U S Navy during the Vietnam Era. He worked as a local pediatrician in Succasunna for more than 50 years and was on the staff of Dover General and St. Clare’s Hospitals. He was cherished by of his patients for his kind demeanor and gentle bedside manner, as well as his medical expertise.

Bob was a faithful member of St. Therese parish in Succasunna for over 50 years. An avid baseball fan, Bob rarely missed a Yankees game. He also enjoyed reading and music, and in his younger years would often entertain friends by playing his favorite songs on the piano. During his 32 years of marriage to his beloved wife Gail, he enjoyed traveling and dining out at their favorite restaurants.  Most of all, Bob loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.  He considered it his greatest blessing to care for his disabled son, John, whom he described as his “angel on earth.”

He was predeceased by his wife Gail (nee Saylor) in 1996, and by his sister Judy Cherico.   He is survived by his sister Diane and his 5 children: Kevin L Edwards (and fiancé Darlene Ehrhart) of Venice, FL, Mary B (and Doug) Kortrey of Glen Ridge, Beth A Edwards (and Jim Merritt) of Whitestone, NY, Rob G (and Emily) Edwards of Hackettstown, and John D Edwards of Branchville. He also leaves 11 grandchildren: Matthew, Sarah, Mac, Rose, Lillie, Daniel, Branden, Nicholas, Jimmy, Anthony, and Kyle.

Friends and relatives may visit at the Davis & Hepplewhite Funeral Home,96 Main Street, Succasunna, NJ 973-584-7264 (davishepplewhitefh.com) on Sunday  (August 15th)  from   2 – 5 pm. The Funeral Liturgy will be held on Monday, 10 am, at St. Therese R C Church in Succasunna. The interment will follow, with Military Honors, at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, in East Hanover, NJ
