Dorothy C. Sarsat, a retired nurse, died on Friday, October 18, 2024 after a long illness. She was 87. A resident of Succasunna for the past 58 years, she was born in Wharton at the time of home births, and spent her early life in the Dover and Wharton area.
Devoted to the care of others, Dorothy had a 42 year nursing career at Dover General Hospital (which later became St. Clare’s Hospital/Dover Campus). She was the supervisor of the Operating and Recovery Rooms. Noted for her sincere and kind manner, Dorothy cared for each and every of her thousands of patients with individualized attention, concern, and compassion. She adored animals, and ministered to many cats, dogs, rabbits, and an occasional turtle, all of which filled her home with love. A devoted flower gardener, she had a special love and talent for growing roses and peonies. She also enjoyed needle arts, creating beautiful crochet, knit and cross stitch pieces as a way to relax from a demanding profession.
Dorothy was graduated from Bayley Ellard High School (Madison), class of 1955, and St. Michael’s School of Nursing (Newark) in 1958, from which she received her R.N. She was a former member of the National Association of Operating Room Nurses. She and her husband were active members of the Dover Elks Lodge/Emblem Club from the 1970s through the 1990s.
Dorothy was predeceased by her beloved husband Jacques Sarsat in 1993, and her sister Mary Ann Kennedy in 2013. She is survived by her sister, Joanne Kennedy of Naples, Fl., and many cousins throughout the area.
A Funeral Liturgy will be held on Tuesday, October 29th, 10:00 AM at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton R C Church, Flanders, followed by interment at the First Presbyterian Church of Succasunna Cemetery. The date is of special meaning to Dorothy, as it marks the anniversary of her wedding in 1960. There are no calling hours at the Funeral Home.
