Daniel J. Grounard, 89, of Roxbury, New Jersey, passed away peacefully at home on April 30, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Morristown, he spent his early years in Madison and went on to build a life centered on love of family, humor, and helping others.
Dan dedicated 37 years of his career to C&C Oldsmobile in Madison, NJ, starting as a mechanic and eventually becoming service manager. He was hard-working, possessed a strong work ethic, and led by example—values he taught his children and grandchildren. He was an Oldsmobile man through and through. In fact, it was the only brand of car he and his wife would drive for many years, until General Motors discontinued Oldsmobile, much to his dismay.
After their years in Madison, the family lived in Roxbury for several years before eventually settling into their home in Blairstown. The home later included an apartment for Agnes’s parents and, over the years, became the gathering place for many holidays and special occasions—memorable times filled with delicious food, family, friends, and laughter.
A pastime Dan especially enjoyed sharing with his wife and family was golf. He introduced the game to his children and grandchildren and would play with them and his brothers-in-law, Frank and John, whenever the opportunity arose. At their Blairstown home, many afternoons were spent practicing shots in the backyard. He even encouraged his daughter, Penny, that with enough practice she might just become a pro and make a lot of money—a prediction that unfortunately never came to be!
Dan and Agnes shared a love of traveling during their retirement years. Together, they explored Europe, as well as much of the United States and Canada, enjoying one adventure after another and meeting new people along the way. Some trips were with family, while others were just the two of them. They especially loved visiting their son Danny and his wife, Linda, in Virginia, spending time with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dan cherished every opportunity to be with his grandchildren Anthony and Michael—whether at their sporting events, tournaments, and graduations, or on memorable family trips to Disney and a Caribbean cruise. He never missed a chance to be part of their lives, and they returned his love for him and their grandmother just as deeply.
No tribute to Dan would be complete without recognizing that Agnes was the love of his life. They met young, fell in love, and built a beautiful life together, complete with ups and downs, raising their two children side by side. If you saw one, you almost always saw the other—at the gym, out shopping, or enjoying dinners with family. Dan never held back an “I love you,” and before his passing, he made sure Agnes knew just how deeply she was loved. He passed just shy of their 67th wedding anniversary.
Dan is survived and will be greatly missed by his beloved wife, Agnes; his son, Dr. Daniel Grounard Jr. and his wife, Linda; and his daughter, Penny Grounard and her husband, John (his favorite son-in-law). He is also survived by his brother-in-law, John Elias and his partner, Theresa; his much-loved sister-in-law, Peggy; his four cherished grandchildren, Anthony, Michael, Adam, and Ashley; and his four great-grandchildren, Lexi, Bennie, Lucy, and Addie. He was also close to his many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, all of whom he loved deeply and held a special place in his heart. He was predeceased by his brothers John and Vincent, sister Florence, and brothers-in-law Frank and Matt; sister-in-law Patty; and nieces Ginger and Suzie.
Family and friends may pay their respects on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Davis & Hepplewhite Funeral Home, 96 Main Street, Succasunna, NJ. A Mass celebrating Dan’s life will be held on May 6, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Therese Parish, 151 Main Street, Succasunna, followed by the Repast at Black River Barn at 1178 Route 10 in Randolph.
