Succasunna, Mr. Charles William Alpaugh, 86, died on August 30, 2023 at his home.
He was born in Dover and was a lifelong resident of the Succasunna section of Roxbury Township. He was a 1954 graduate of Roxbury High School, which is now the Lincoln – Roosevelt School. After High School he attended film school in New York City and was drafted and served in the U S ARMY from 1960-1962. He continued in the ARMY reserves for 4 more years following active service. After the Army, he worked for the Honeywell Company (formerly Allied Chemical Co and Allied Signal) in Morris Township, as a Senior Lab Technician for 28 years before retiring in 1991. Following his retirement he stayed active by driving a school bus for Roxbury Public Schools and served on the Roxbury Historical Trust and the Roxbury High School Alumni Association.
He joined the fire department at the age of 21. He rose through the ranks of leadership and served as Chief of Roxbury Fire Company Number One from 1978-1980 and became Department Chief in 1981. He continued to serve as firefighter and EMT afterwards and became the longest serving member of Company #1 with 65 years of service. He also was an exempt member of the New Jersey State Firemen’s Association.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ellen Alpaugh. His son Robert and his wife Katherine of Tennessee, daughter Dawn and her husband Dave of Succasunna, grandchildren, Brianna of Tennessee, David and his husband Nicholas of Hopatcong, and Matthew and his wife Shelly of Succasunna, Elise and her husband Brian of Pennsylvania, Anne and her Husband Michael of Pennsylvania, great granddaughter Kennedy of Tennessee, and great-grandsons Will and Hunter, of Pennsylvania, and by his sister Marguerite June Varcoe of Succasunna.
Friends may visit at the Davis & Hepplewhite Funeral Home, 96 Main Street, Succasunna, NJ 973-584-7264 (davishepplewhitefh.com) on Monday September 4th from 3 – 8 pm. With the Fireman’s Service at 7:30 pm.
The Funeral Service, with Military Honors, will be held at the Funeral Home on Tuesday September 5th at 11 am, followed by a Last Call Service at the Roxbury Company #1 Firehouse at 12 Noon.
