Roxbury Township, Bertha Salvesen, of Succasunna, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 after a short illness. She was 100. She was born in Brooklyn, NY on March 4, 1922 to Hans and Serine Sorensen. At the age of 5, after the death of her mother, she and her brother Thomas, now deceased, lived in Norway with relatives for 5 years, returning to the USA after the marriage of their father to Margit Johansen as they then had a mother to care for them. After High School she went to a business school and became a secretary to a financial advisor. During WW II she married Sverre Salvesen, lived in North Carolina during his Army training and had the blessing of his safe return from occupied Japan when the War was over. In 1951 they moved to Succasunna, built their own home, and took part in the building of Hillside Lutheran Brethren Church where they were active members for the rest of their lives.
Bertha had the joy of sharing 65 years together with Sverre before his death in 2008. Survivors include her daughter Judith Hjembo of Succasunna, her son Warren and wife Andrea of Flanders, 4 grandchildren; Beth and husband David Droney, Matthew and his wife Kyleen Hjembo, Lindsey and husband William Wensley, Emily and husband Stephen Geiger, and six great grandchildren; Samuel, Nathan, Elise, Sierra, Haakon, and Karianne.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Hillside Lutheran Brethren Church, Succasunna, on Saturday, April 23rd, 2022, at 3 pm. The private burial will be at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Chester.
