Albert J Ferrara

Roxbury & Mt. Arlington Township      Mr. Albert “Bo” John Ferrara (86), passed away peacefully with his wife and son by his side on Friday April 29, 2011 at Dover General Hospital. He was born in Astoria, NY, and after attending Flushing High School he was drafted into the US Army to fight in WWII with the 101st Airborne division. Bo, along with the “Screaming Eagles”, parachuted into Normandy on D-Day and later took part in the famous Battle of the Bulge where they were surrounded for six days in sub-freezing temperatures. They were relieved by General Patton and his Third Army on the day after Christmas in 1944. Weeks later, Al was wounded in Holland and received the Purple Heart for his efforts. From 1951-1968 he lived in Hoboken before moving to Roxbury Township and Mt. Arlington 43 years ago.

After his service, Bo played professional baseball for the Brooklyn Dodgers. During one spring training game, a foul ball was hit out of play, and was retrieved by his future, surviving, and loving wife, Sylvia Teller. In 1957 he purchased Stony Circle Farm in Mt. Arlington and Roxbury. Al was employed by New York World Telegram and Somerset Publishing Co. in Bound Brook. In 2006 he was honored as the Mt. Arlington Grand Marshal at the Memorial Day Parade.

Bo is survived today by his wife Sylvia (Teller) Ferrara, son David (and his wife Wendy) Ferrara of Roxbury, owner of Davy’s Dogs in Mt. Arlington, and daughter Melissa (and husband Mark) McDonald of Stroudsburg, PA. He also loved his grandchildren: David and Andrew Ferrara, and Mark and Debora McDonald. Bo greatly enjoyed the holidays with the family and wood working. After seeing the unique European styles, he built his own home using the Swiss Chalet theme and many colors and decorations. This design in the same used in his son’s restaurant. Al Ferrara was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather and he will remain one happy memory after another for all who knew him.
