Arnold Giovannoli (94) of Roxbury Township NJ, died peacefully at home after a short illness.
Born on April 30, 1930 in Phillipsburg NJ, he grew up in Summit Hill PA and Hoboken NJ. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Newark College of Engineering (now NJIT), was a former President of fraternity Alpha Phi Delta and enjoyed extra curricular basketball, later inducted into the Varsity Basketball Hall of Fame. On November 22, 1953, he married Elizabeth “Betty” (nee Meier) of Bloomfield NJ. He served as a Second Lieutenant of the Air Force during the Korean War, then began work in National Defense at Picatinny Arsenal for 30 years. After retiring, he began his own Consulting Firm, remaining active in National Defense. Arnold loved helping others. He participated in CYO basketball in Mine Hill, then began Recreation Basketball as part of the Roxbury Twp. Recreation Department. He sat on the Zoning Board for 5 years and helped support and expand the town’s Social Services Department. He was a Charter Member of the St. Therese RC Church Knights of Columbus Organization, where he provided scholarships to students of the local STEM Program. In his free time, he prided himself as a Masters-level golfer!
Arnold is survived by Elizabeth, his wife of 71 years, daughters Deborah Giovannoli of Stroudsburg PA and Bettina Stukenbroeker of Succasunna NJ, Son Anthony Giovannoli (Laura) of Ridgefield CT, grandchildren Paul Giovannoli, Dana Stukenbroeker, Drew Giovannoli, Laurelle Giovannoli, Michaela Giovannoli-Deane, Teresa Giovannoli and 3 great-grandchildren; Ellie and Hugo Giovannoli and Marcus Giovannoli. He was pre-deceased by brother Ralph Giovannoli 1997 and sister Dolores Belgiovine 2020. He is survived by a brother, Joseph Giovannoli.

His funeral service will be held on Friday, 12 noon at the Funeral Home. The interment will follow at the Succasunna Presbyterian Cemetery with Military Honors. Then a small repast will be held at Elizabeth’s home.
Joyce H Mooney of Brookside, NJ passed away on Dec 7th 2024 at her home, she was 88. Joyce grew up in Netcong, NJ. She was the daughter of Fred and Hazel Mooney also of Netcong. Her father was a landmark owner of Mooney Brothers Dairy Farm atop Mooney Mountain, NJ. He was a celebrated 32 degree Mason. After graduating from Netcong High School, Joyce attended Muhlenberg School of Nursing. Joyce moved to Brookside in 1970 with her five children, and as a single mom raised five children.
Joyce is survived by her 5 children; Cathy Bishop of Kenvil, NJ, Cheryl Tartaglia of North Port FL, Craig Mooney of Milford NJ, Douglas Mooney of Oakland Park FL and Daren and Sara Mooney of Quincy, MA. She was beloved by her seven grandchildren; Anthony Tartaglia, III, Jilliane Tartaglia Guilfoyle, North Port, FL, Britt, Kieran and, Malakai Mooney, Tolland, CT, Amanda and Kyle Mooney of Milford NJ. Five great grandchildren Alessandra, Lucas, and Gianna Guilfoyle, of FL, Khloe and Karysn Tartaglia of FL. Joyce is also survived by her younger sister Gail and Lee Grobe of Alexandria, VA. and her niece and nephews; Suzanne, David and Daniel Grobe of VA.
Joyce was employed by the Morris County Clerk Office for 23 years. Joyce was an avid reader of mysteries, and a die hard N Y Yankees fan who never missed a game. She was famous for her homemade brownies, Easter lamb cake, and gingerbread men. Joyce was a rare civilian who was aboard the USS Enterprise CVN-65 departing from NOB Norfolk, Va with her son Petty Officer Douglas F Mooney. Joyce will be missed by all her special neighbors of Brookside as well.
A Celebration of Joyce’s life will be announced in the Spring of 2025 in Netcong NJ.

Roxbury Township, Mrs. Jean Therese Rich, 96 died on December 3, 2024 at the Oakland Care Center. She was born in Newark NJ and lived in Roxbury for a total of 50+years. She was a retired bookkeeper for A & P in Ledgewood and Randolph NJ. She was an original member of St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church, Succasunna NJ.
Jean took great pride in being active in her communities. She was a volunteer at both Sommerville Medical Center in Sommerville SC and Muhlenberg Hospital in Bethlehem PA.
Jean was quite active in the churches she was a member of. At St Dunstan’s she served on the Altar Guild and Prayer Shawl Ministry, as well as providing Pastoral Care. Jean was also on the Altar Guild at St Paul’s in SC and Cathedral Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem PA. She held the role of Treasurer ECW and provided Pastoral Care at St Paul’s .
She is predeceased by her husband James Maloney 1953, Her husband Charles Walter Rich 2004, and by her daughter Cathleen Toth in 2010. She is survived by her 4 children, Kevin (Michelle) Rich of Edison NJ, Brian (Susan) Rich of Richmond VA, Charles Alan (Beatriz) Rich of Reno Nevada, and Cynthia (Glenn) Boyd of Oakland NJ. She also leaves her sister Virginia Pope of Wallingford CT., 12 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
Her celebration of life and internment will be held at St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church in Succasunna on Saturday December 14th 2024 at 11am.

Mr. Wayne N Berry Sr, 87, died on November 28, 2024, at the Merry Heart Nursing Home in Succasunna, surrounded by his family. He was born at home in Kenvil and lived in Roxbury Township all his life. He was a 1958 graduate of Roxbury High School and was a retired Maintenance Worker for Chester Township, after 35 years. Growing up, he was an outstanding athlete in sports, but particularly a stand-out in baseball, achieving minor league status, and nicknamed “Yogi”, after the All-Star. He continued this passion by following high school and professional sports throughout his life. He was a former member of the Central Jersey Beagle Club and various Pigeon Clubs. He loved being outdoors and was particularly adept in horticulture and landscape design; he was also a creative artist and enjoyed sketching and drawing in his spare time.
He is survived by his wife Kathleen “Kathy” (Seitz) Berry of 56 years, and by his 3 children Wayne (and Maria) Berry, Jr, Raritan, Bonnie (and Joseph) Blaszak of Randolph, and Tracy (and fiancé Kyle Colgate) Berry of Hopatcong, and his 5 Grandchildren; Aaron, Evan, Samantha, Alexa, and Royce.

Mrs. Johanna Schleck of Randolph, NJ passed away peacefully on November 24, 2024 at Sunrise of Randolph. Johanna celebrated her 100th birthday in June of this year. She was born in Weimar Germany and moved to the US in 1955. She and her husband, Herbert, first settled in Syracuse NY. From Syracuse they moved to Daytona Beach, FL, Cherry Hill, NJ, finally making their home in Randolph in 1968.
Johanna was predeceased by her husband, Herbert F Schleck, and is survived by her son, James H Schleck, of Morristown.
Visitation will be at Davis & Hepplewhite Funeral Home, 96 Main Street, Succasunna, NJ on Thursday, December 12 from 3-5 pm. with a funeral service to be held at 4 pm.

Julie Karen Johannesen, (86), died on November 22, 2024, at Holy Spirit Hospital in Mechanicsburg, PA.
She was born in Brooklyn, New York, and lived in Mt Arlington, NJ for many years before moving to Mechanicsburg, PA. She was a member of Hillside Lutheran Brethren Church in Succasunna, NJ.
Karen, as she was affectionately known, was a shining light in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her journey on this earth was one marked by love, compassion and an unwavering faith in God. Her passing has left a void in the hearts of her family, friends, and many more whose lives were touched by her.
She is survived by her husband Allen Johannesen of 50 years, and by her son Mark (Wendy), granddaughter Ella, sisters-in-law Christine Thronsen, and Gladys Johannesen, nieces Wendy (Paul Preihs), Heidi (Christian Hoffer), Becky Johannesen, Julie Johannesen and nephews Leif (Amy Thronsen), Eric (Janice Johannesen) and Peter (Brenda Johannesen) and many great nieces and great nephews.
She is predeceased by her parents Arne and Johanne Thronsen, brother Walter and brother-in-law, Bruce Johannesen.
Before retiring, Karen was employed as an executive secretary for the president of Cities Service Oil Company, New York, NY.

Roxbury Township, Mrs. Irene Rosko, 96, devoted wife, mother and aunt, passed away on November 21, 2024 at the Excel Care Center in Dover, NJ. She was born and raised in The Bronx, NY and lived in Fair Lawn, Greenwood Lake, and West Milford, before moving to Ledgewood 8 years ago. She was a retired Executive Secretary for the American Can Company in Fair Lawn, NJ. Always career minded and a sharp dresser. She was also a former member of St. Paul’s Slovak Evangelical Lutheran Church in The Bronx, NY and the Forever Young Seniors in Succasunna, NJ. She enjoyed spending time with family at her home in Greenwood Lake on weekends swimming and barbequing. She was known as a member of the “Golden Girls” spending time with her sisters Betty, Sue and her cousin Florence (now all deceased) traveling, cruising, playing card games or just having a happy hour together.
She was predeceased by her husband Stanley Rosko in 1982, and is survived by her 2 daughters; Roxanne Wintjen of Flanders and Joan Rosko of Leesburg, FL. She also leaves her nieces and nephews John Rosko, Linda Rubenstein, Bruce Aguiar, Karen Sheehan, Rosemary Fetzko (deceased) and Stephen Rosko Jr. and many great nieces and nephews plus great great nieces and nephews. Plus many other family members and close friends too numberous to mention. She was loved by all.

Mr. George Wien, of Roxbury Township, died at home at the age of 96 on November 19, 2024. He was born in Irvington, N.J., served in the U.S. Army during WWII, obtained his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Chemistry.
He began his career as a medical technologist at Morristown Memorial devising special biochemical tests. St. Barnabas Hospital asked him to start a Special Chemistry section in their chemistry lab. He also started his own lab at this time, working out of his home first and later setting up Wien Labs in Flanders, N.J. The high quality of his tests were well-known both nationally and world-wide.
He was a long time member of the Roxbury Rotary and a past President of this organization, where he also received the Paul Harris Award.
After retiring, he developed a strong interest in historical restoration, especially involving the Morris Canal Inclined Plane in Ledgewood, N.J.. He set up the Roxbury Historic Trust, with the help of Roxbury Rotary and the Roxbury Township Historical Society and, was its President for the first 10 years. The focus of attention was on restoration of the King Store (which serviced the canal boats), and then the adjacent King House (home of Theodore King).
He enjoyed golf, historical restoration and was a superb cook.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years Emily (Coch) Wien, by his two sons Scott and Bret Wien, his step-son Christopher Neuman, and his four grandchildren: Kelly 22, Adam 19, Benjamin 8 and Veronica 6.

Roxbury Township—Marguerite “June” Varcoe, 86, passed away peacefully on November 18, 2024 after a brief illness. Born in Dover, NJ on June 17, 1938, to William and Marguerite (Nelson) Alpaugh, June lived most of her life in Succasunna. She graduated from Roxbury High School in 1956 and earned her RN from Orange Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1959. June worked at St. Claire’s Hospital in Denville and later at Welkind Neurological Hospital and Kessler Institute in Chester.
As a young woman, June sang in the church choir, was a Girl Scout, and had a summer job working for a sightseeing boat at Hopatcong State Park. As a young mother, she was a den leader for the Boy Scouts, a troop leader for the Girl Scouts, and president of the Roxbury Fire Company #1 Ladies Auxiliary.
A lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church of Succasunna, June served the church in many ways, including as a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher, treasurer of the Presbyterian Women, a member of both the Esther and Sarah Martha circles, chair of the Fellowship Committee, and as a Deacon for more than 25 years. In recent years, June portrayed a number of her ancestors at the church’s Cemetery Tour. If you have ever enjoyed a bowl of soup following the church’s Blood Drive or cookies from Olde Suckasunny Day, you likely have her to thank!
June’s greatest joy came from being a mother and grandmother. She spent many summers at Horseshoe Lake watching her children learn to swim and then cheering for them and her granddaughter in swim meets and lifeguard competitions. June was always a presence at school concerts, marching band competitions, theatre performances, and ice hockey games. A friend to all, she cherished countless lifelong friendships, many lasting more than 50 years.
June was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Charles Alpaugh. She is survived by her three children: Chris Varcoe (Kelly), Cindy Medici, and Jennifer Lee (Henry), and her five grandchildren: Alicia Varcoe Webb (Bill), Shannon Varcoe, Amelia Medici, Sam Lee, and Rachel Lee.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 29, 2024 at 10:30 am at the First Presbyterian Church of Succasunna. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Deacons of the First Presbyterian Church of Succasunna.
