Miriam L Mason

Roxbury Township, Miriam L “Mimi” Mason, 81, died on June 19, 2020 at her home. She was born and raised in St Paul, MN and lived in Rockaway before moving to Succasunna 44 years ago. She earned her LPN degree from the County College of Morris and her Master’s degree in Social Work from Rutgers University. She was a counselor & psychotherapist.

Mimi had a very enriching life. Growing up in St. Paul, she was surrounded by her very large Jewish family. Always on an adventure with an Aunt or another family member; always feeling an abundance of family love. She enjoyed her school years, and remained life long friends with many classmates; quite amazing! She adored her father Emil, treasured the time and memories of him; and was devastated by his early passing when she was 29 years old.

When Mimi was a young mother of three children, she loved to cook, bake, read, make homemade candles, etc; but she yearned for more. She returned to CCM, and earned her LPN Nursing License. It was during this time that she discovered her true love, Psychology. She spent a summer, as a nurse at Boy Scout Camp Winnebago In Marcella NJ, and was employed at Greystone Hospital Prior to returning to Rutgers College to pursue her Masters in Social Work.

She loved traveling, being fortunate to visit Throughout Europe, St. Kitts, Ireland, and Israel, to name a few; and shared most of these travels with her husband Bob, but also with several of her children.

She was very involved into researching her Jewish Ancestry & Genealogy. She learned that most of her ancestors were lost in the WWII Holocaust. Doing much research online, another genealogist Gilberto Yugend (living in Israel) made contact with her. He was able to make a connection between their families – making them the only two surviving branches.

Mimi shared her love of life with so many people. Through the years she accepted into her family many foster children, exchange students, and more. She learned as much from them as they did from her. Many of her ‘children’ throughout the world have kept in touch and/or visited her in the following years!

Mimi was also an avid reader, always with a book or ten! She loved her relaxing time tending to her ever expanding garden, plants, vegetables, etc. Most of her neighbors know her as the ‘Frog Lady’ or the ‘Fairy Lady’, as she put up a large display on her front yard – simply for the children in her neighborhood to enjoy.

Anyone that knows Mimi, knows she valued her job as a Psychotherapist above all. She loved helping others, and devoted her life to doing so. Always there for anyone in need.

Mimi was a wife, a mom, a friend, but her favorite title had to be ‘Grandma’ or ‘Grandma Mimi’!!

She was predeceased by her husband the Rev. Robert T Mason in 2004 and by her son Michael Norman in 1987, and by her sister Deborah Kerssen. She is survived by her 7 children;  Richard (and Mary Beth) Norman, Robyn (and Robert) Alt, Robert H (and Rachel) Mason, Mark Mason, Pamela (and Jim) Stoeker, Cathy Phan, and Joann (and Chris) Prochaska. She also leaves her brother and sister; Stanley “Sonny” David Hartman, Ruth (and Michael) Fallon, 14 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.

Friends may visit the Davis & Hepplewhite Funeral Home, 96 Main Street, Succasunna, NJ 973-584-7264 (davishepplewhitefh.com) on Tuesday from 2 – 5 (on a rotating basis). There will be a graveside service on Wednesday, 10 am, at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Chester.
