Roxbury Township, Mr. Michael Vavrek Jr, 90, died on October 3, 2022 at home in Succasunna. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and lived there before moving to Succasunna 60 years ago. He earned his Master’s Degree in Music Education from The College of New Jersey, and was a teacher, musician, and was a Korean War Veteran. For many years he was an educator and a founding member of the Holy Wisdom Byzantine Orthodox Church in Flanders. He also taught many orchestras. His last teaching position was at Franklin Township schools in Somerset County, NJ. He met his wife Joy W. Vavrek at Duquesne University and was married for 63 years. He loved playing the violin and eating Klondikes.

He is survived by his children, Michael Thaddeus, Paul Andrew, and Mary Veronica. Also, his two grandchildren, Christopher and Obra. He was predeceased by his wife Joy who passed in December 2020 and his parents Michael Sr. and Mary (Smilnisky).

Arrangements are by the Davis & Hepplewhite Funeral Home, 96 Main Street, Succasunna, NJ 973-584-7264 (davishepplewhitefh.com) The Byzantine Catholic Service will be held Saturday, October 8^th at Holy Wisdom Byzantine Orthodox Church in Flanders at 11 am, with the burial at the Succasunna Presbyterian Cemetery.
