Roxbury Township—Marguerite “June” Varcoe, 86, passed away peacefully on November 18, 2024 after a brief illness. Born in Dover, NJ on June 17, 1938, to William and Marguerite (Nelson) Alpaugh, June lived most of her life in Succasunna. She graduated from Roxbury High School in 1956 and earned her RN from Orange Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1959. June worked at St. Claire’s Hospital in Denville and later at Welkind Neurological Hospital and Kessler Institute in Chester.
As a young woman, June sang in the church choir, was a Girl Scout, and had a summer job working for a sightseeing boat at Hopatcong State Park. As a young mother, she was a den leader for the Boy Scouts, a troop leader for the Girl Scouts, and president of the Roxbury Fire Company #1 Ladies Auxiliary.
A lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church of Succasunna, June served the church in many ways, including as a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher, treasurer of the Presbyterian Women, a member of both the Esther and Sarah Martha circles, chair of the Fellowship Committee, and as a Deacon for more than 25 years. In recent years, June portrayed a number of her ancestors at the church’s Cemetery Tour. If you have ever enjoyed a bowl of soup following the church’s Blood Drive or cookies from Olde Suckasunny Day, you likely have her to thank!
June’s greatest joy came from being a mother and grandmother. She spent many summers at Horseshoe Lake watching her children learn to swim and then cheering for them and her granddaughter in swim meets and lifeguard competitions. June was always a presence at school concerts, marching band competitions, theatre performances, and ice hockey games. A friend to all, she cherished countless lifelong friendships, many lasting more than 50 years.
June was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Charles Alpaugh. She is survived by her three children: Chris Varcoe (Kelly), Cindy Medici, and Jennifer Lee (Henry), and her five grandchildren: Alicia Varcoe Webb (Bill), Shannon Varcoe, Amelia Medici, Sam Lee, and Rachel Lee.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 29, 2024 at 10:30 am at the First Presbyterian Church of Succasunna. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Deacons of the First Presbyterian Church of Succasunna.
