Dover, Joseph G Devaney, 97.5, died on September 23, 2021 at St. Clare’s Hospital, Dover. He was born May 8, 1924 at home, on a cow farm in Mine Hill, NJ. He was raised in Boonton, NJ, where he spent his early years, graduating Boonton High School. He was briefly employed as a Tool & Dye Maker in Newark, NJ.

In December 1943 when he enlisted in the U S ARMY to fight in WW II. After serving in the Pacific Theater during the Philippines Campaign (Oct , he was discharged from the US Army in December, 1945.

Upon his return from the War, he attended Rider College and earned his degree in Accounting and met Helen (Burke) Devaney (deceased 2015) and wed in 1952. Shortly after they wed, he passed the CPA exam and joined the firm of Phillip Brooks & Co in Bloomfield, NJ.

Joe & Helen moved to Randolph Township, NJ in 1956 where they lived for 53 years. In 1958 he was invited to become a partner in the firm he started with, then called Brooks, Bass, Devaney, Kulsar & Leshner in Montclair, NJ, and in 1974 Bass & Devaney. After the passing of Joe’s partner, his daughter eventually joined as partner, and after Joe’s retirement at age of 76. His legacy lives on as his daughter KellyAnne D. Carmona CPA continues his legacy.

Joe was recognized by several organizations for his support in the 70’s, 80’s & 90’s of various addiction organizations,

including as a board member to the predecessor addiction treatment facility in Mendham now called Daytop. He was an avid champion of the local fundraiser called “The Dope Open”, working closely with the Open’s founder, Mary Mullhalnd.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Dover, NJ where he sat on various committees over the years and was one of the first Eucharistic Ministers to serve the parish.

In addition to Helen, Joe was predeceased by his parents, William and Eva (Macdougall) Devaney, and his two older brothers Harry Devaney and Edward Devaney. He is survived by his daughter KellyAnne (and Marvin) Carmona of Randolph, and son Kevin (and Dominique) Devaney of Evergreen, CO. He also leaves his 5 grandchildren; Lauren and Karl Erickson of New Jersey, and Payden, Lyla and Ascher Devaney of Colorado, and his amazing great grandson Draco Erickson.

Friends and relatives may visit at the Davis & Hepplewhite Funeral Home,96 Main Street, Succasunna, NJ 973-584-7264 (davishepplewhitefh.com) on Sunday (October 10th) from 10 – 11 am. The Funeral Service will be held at 11 am, with Military Honors. The interment will follow at Arlington National Veterans Cemetery,  at a later date.
