John J Purtell

Roxbury Township, Mr. John J Purtell, 83, passed away on November 18, 2016 at the Kindred Care Center in Dover. He was born in Morristown, NJ on November 20, 1932, a son of the late James and Evelyn Anderson Purtell.

Jack, also known as “Honey Boy” or “Shak Jack”, resided in Randolph for more than 40 years before moving to Ledgewood. At age 16 he joined the National Guard and then served in the U S Army during the Korean Conflict. He later became a machinist at Westinghouse Elevators (later known as Schindler) in Randolph for 32 years. He was an avid sports fan, loved to brag about his grandkids, and could always be seen socializing at Mike’s Barber Shop, Muldoon’s, or Ron’s with friends.

He is survived by his daughters, Linda D’Addario and her husband Charles of Morris Township, Patricia Purtell of Florham Park; his beloved grandchildren, Andrew, Thomas, Michael, Axel and Severina; his brother, Richard Purtell and his wife Peggy of Bolivia, NC; and his sister-in-law Nora Purtell of Morris Township. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Maureen Russo and her husband James, and his brother Robert Purtell.

His Memorial Service will be held on Monday, December 26th, at 11 am, at the Davis & Hepplewhite Funeral Home, 96 Main Street, Succasunna 973-584-7264 (davishepplewhitefh.com) with an entombment to follow at the Holy Rood Cemetery Mausoleum at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Veterans of Foreign Wars at www.vfw.org .
