Dr. Robert (“Bob”) Loring of Hopatcong, New Jersey died at home on February 25, 2019.  He was born on July 11, 1933 in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Alex and Mildred (née Arkawy) Lifschutz. Bob attended Midwood High School (‘51), Columbia College (‘55), and the Columbia University School of Oral and Dental Surgery (‘58), where he also completed a program in orthodontics. While at Columbia College, Bob was an oarsman in the heavy weight crew and in dental school was the photography editor of the yearbook. In December 1957, Bob married Barbara Greenberg.

After dental school Bob entered the U. S. Army, and was stationed at Fort Monroe in Newport News, Virginia from 1959-1961, achieving the rank of Captain.  After discharge from service, Bob and Barbara settled in Staten Island, where Bob established his orthodontics practice, was president of the Staten Island branch of the Alpha Omega dental fraternity, was active in Kiwanis, volunteered in the Staten Island Hospital dental clinic, and they raised their daughters, Robyn and Susan.

Upon retirement, Bob and Barbara relocated to their summer home in Hopatcong.  Bob was an active participant in his children and grandchildren’s lives —attending every game, always showing enthusiasm and support for those he loved. In retirement, Bob enjoyed lectures on art, history, politics, economics and the movies and traveling with his family.

Bob was an avid classic movie buff and science fiction reader, loved boats, automobiles and car racing, and enjoyed building electronics and home construction projects.

Bob’s wit, gentle and kind heart, and smile will be missed by his many friends and family. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara Ruth (née Greenberg), his daughter Robyn Loring Specthrie (Leon Specthrie), daughter Susan Loring Crane (Hugh Crane) , and his grandchildren, John Crane, Alexandra Crane and Caroline Crane, and many loving nieces and nephews.
